(More customer reviews)For 313.00, you can buy about 100 or so gallons of gas, so you need to consider this fact before running out and buying the Hypertech 52000 which may only net you about 1 or 2 additional miles per gallon. You also need to consider that this device, in the case of my Dodge Ram 1500, really doesn't have a "POWER" setting. Instead, the tool walks you through a series of adjustments that you can make to your truck's computer. They are: gas type (premium or regular) tire size diameter adjustment, top speed limiter (based on tire speed rating, I selected "Z" 255 MPH rated) and transmission shift rev adjust (-100,-200,-300,-400, +100,+200,+300,+400)
The process is pretty straight forward and takes about 10 to 15 minutes to complete. However, in the case of my model year, I needed to use the included software and update the programmer with an internet download. This took another 15 minutes or so and went rather smoothly. You'll need to pay close attention to the software updates and make sure you select the correct model year for your truck.
For my truck, I decided to set for Premium Gas, updated my speed limiter to 255 MPH, and adjusted the transmission shift revs to +400 (this means the engine will wind out an additional 400 RPM before shifting.) The results? The engine seems to be idling a tad bit rougher. The shifts are coming later, so I am noticing more pull and less lag when the shift does happen. I have to wait and see where the mileage ends up at. I am not expecting big gains there. I was interested in more power and I guess I am noticing a very small increase in power, mostly related to the later shifts and possibly the higher octane gas. Am I seeing the 21 HP boost Hypertech claims I should get? Can't say since I am not going to dyno my truck to find out, but I seriously doubt I am getting that much more HP.
Overall, the Hypertech Max Energy Power Programmer can do some cool things. And to some people, it might be worth the money (especially the ability to adjust for wheel size.) I think, however, it's probably not worth it in my case. I'll see how my mileage does, but at this point, it's very likely I will restore my truck to stock and return the Hypertech 52000 for a refund.
